Lianjiang’s “Huangguan No. 2” Kelp Variety Successfully Passes Cultivation Demonstration and Yield Assessment
Great news from the “Kelp Capital of China”—On June 7, experts from the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences conducted the first demonstration and yield assessment of the new kelp variety “Huangguan No. 2” in Guanwu Village, Xiaocheng Town, Lianjiang, Fujian. After a thorough on-site assessment and discussions, the expert panel unanimously concluded that “Huangguan No. 2” kelp boasts an average fresh weight of 1.05 kilograms per plant, with a maximum yield of 30 tons per mu. The variety shows significant promise for large-scale cultivation and has passed the site acceptance successfully.
Rong Xiaojun, Deputy Director of the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute at the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, noted that for years, China’s kelp cultivation has been plagued by issues such as a concentrated thickening phase, a short harvest window, and relatively low yields from early-maturing kelp varieties. To overcome this industry challenge, the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, in partnership with Guanwu Marine Products Development Co., Ltd. in Lianjiang, carried out a selective breeding program for early-maturing kelp varieties. By crossbreeding the late-maturing “Huangguan No. 1” with northern early-thickening kelp strains, they successfully developed the new “Huangguan No. 2” kelp variety. The “Huangguan No. 2” kelp variety has successfully passed six yield assessments in regions like Shandong and Liaoning. This is its first evaluation in southern China, where it has demonstrated outstanding traits, high yields, and strong economic benefits, highlighting its adaptability to both northern and southern coastal farming environments.
It is reported that the “Huangguan No. 2” kelp variety features high yield, superior quality, high-temperature resistance, and high ability to withstand strong winds and waves. These qualities make it well-suited for deep-sea farming. Its harvest period is notably longer than that of regular kelp, lasting from late April to early July. With a potential yield of 25 to 30 tons per mu, this variety supports the expansion of the kelp industry and helps increase farmers’ incomes.
