CCTV Focuses on Fuzhou’s Abalone Farming 1.3 Billion Lianjiang Abalone Head North to Escape the Heat
On April 22, CCTV’s Live News aired a segment titled “Lianjiang County, Fujian: Rising Sea Temperatures Trigger Abalone’s Northern Journey to Escape the Heat,” focusing on the abalone farming model in Fuzhou.
The Lianjiang abalone boards a live-water transport vessel.
As the weather warms, the water temperature in Lianjiang rises, prompting 1.3 billion Lianjiang abalones to enter “migratory bird mode.” They board specialized ships and vehicles heading north, kicking off their annual “summer migration.”
“We first tried air transport, then switched to land transport. Later, due to the growing shipping demands and a higher mortality rate among the abalone, we developed two 5,000-ton live-water transport vessels in 2015,” said Wu Yongshou, head of Fujian Zhongxin Yongfeng Industrial Co., Ltd. The ship is equipped with a spray-based water supply system that ensures efficient seawater circulation for the abalone, maintaining optimal oxygen levels and enhancing survival rates during transport.
According to reports, this year, 300 million finished and semi-finished abalones, along with 1 billion abalone seedlings, will make their way north from Lianjiang. They will travel over 1,600 kilometers to the cooler waters of Rongcheng in Shandong and Dalian in Liaoning. After a few months of “northern farming,” the semi-finished abalones will be sold locally, while the abalone seedlings are expected to “return home” in early December to spend the winter.
According to the information, the ideal water temperature for abalone growth is between 15°C and 25°C. The “migratory bird” model, where abalones travel north for the summer and south for the winter, not only shortens the farming cycle but also boosts both survival rates and quality.
