Every year, from April to June, it’s the season for harvesting and drying kelp. Recently, kelp farmers in Lianjiang have been making the most of the sunny weather to dry their kelp, putting on a vibrant “spring drying” show.

At the drying yard in Guanling Village, Pukou Town, dark green kelp drapes over bamboo racks like satin ribbons, gently fluttering in the sea breeze. Over a dozen kelp farmers move between the racks, working together to hang the thick, glossy kelp on the racks, creating a distinctive sight.

Why is kelp dried? According to reports, kelp sold in the market is usually sun-dried, which preserves its natural flavor and nutrients as much as possible. This also makes it more convenient for long-term storage and transportation. However, drying kelp is a physically demanding job. “We opted for a method of inserting poles and hanging ropes for sun-drying, which not only saves time and labor but also ensures the kelp remains clean, with intact fronds and top quality,” said villager Zheng Ziliang.

According to statistics, the area dedicated to kelp farming in Lianjiang has reached 113,500 mu this year. (Fuzhou Evening News Reporter: Zheng Ruiyang; Correspondent: Lian Rongmei)
