Fuzhou traditional snacks at Antailou.
In 1995, a book titled Fuzhou Local Snacks was published, featuring a collection of snack recipes and preparation methods that were once popular throughout the streets and alleys of Fuzhou, leaving a lasting mark on the city’s culinary culture.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the publication of the classic Fuzhou Local Snacks and the 160th anniversary of the founding of Juchunyuan. A sensory feast is about to unfold. On March 28, the “Bowl Banquet” brand under Fuzhou Evening News’ A Bite of Fuzhou, will collaborate with Antailou, a branch of the Fuzhou Juchunyuan Group, to launch the Spring Snack Feast. This event will feature over a dozen iconic Fuzhou snacks, each a timeless classic in its own right. The Fish Balls & Pork Wontons symbolize peace and reunion. The fish balls are delightfully chewy, the wonton wrappers smooth, and the filling fresh and savory - each bite brings the comforting taste of home. The Fangxiang Crispy Pastry boasts a crunchy exterior, enclosing a savory meat filling that lingers in the mouth long after the last bite. The Rose-flavored Steamed Rice Cake carries a delicate hint of rose fragrance, soft and glutinous in texture, sweet without being overpowering, offering a touch of spring’s romance. The Supreme Pot Edge Paste, with its fine texture and abundant ingredients, presents the unique flavor of Fuzhou. The Antailou Crispy Shrimp features fresh shrimp encased in a crispy shell, with each bite delivering an irresistible crunch. The Intangible Heritage Taro Puree is carefully crafted, smooth and velvety, with a mouthwatering aroma - an exemplary dish of Fuzhou’s traditional cuisine. The Qingliu Water Chestnut Cake is refreshing and sweet, with a chewy texture that adds a crisp, refreshing touch to the Spring Feast…
Antailou, a branch of the Fuzhou Juchunyuan Group, carries a deep historical legacy. It serves as a living testament to Fuzhou’s culinary culture, having witnessed the city’s evolution and the continuity of its food traditions. Since the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, Antailou has endured the passage of time, leaving an enduring imprint on Fuzhou’s culinary landscape.
It’s worth noting that the Spring Snack Feast offers a special 10-person set priced at 588 yuan. Local residents can make reservations by logging onto the “Yunshang Juchunyuan” platform. (Fuzhou Evening News Reporter: Xiao Yuanqiang, photo courtesy of the company)
