Hepingjie in Changle and Houzhang Xiwei in Luoyuan Listed Among Provincial-Level Historical and Cultural Districts
On April 22, the People’s Government of Fujian Province announced the sixth batch of provincial-level historical and cultural districts, comprising 14 sites in total. Notably, the Hepingjie Historical and Cultural District in Changle District and the Houzhang Xiwei Historical and Cultural District in Luoyuan County were included on the list.
The Hepingjie Historical and Cultural District is the best-preserved area of the Wuhang Ancient Town in Changle, with the richest historical and cultural heritage and an abundance of historic buildings. The Hepingjie Historical and Cultural District, one of Fuzhou’s key heritage sites, embodies distinctive elements of Changle’s Maritime Silk Road legacy, gentry traditions, and literary culture. It is an integral part of Mindu culture and a vibrant showcase of Changle’s unique cultural identity. The Hepingjie Historical and Cultural District covers a total area of 20.5 hectares (about 300 mu). As the lead developer and operator, Changle District Urban Development Investment Holding Co., Ltd. advances its preservation-focused development and sustainable growth with professional expertise. Currently, revitalization efforts in the Hepingjie Historical and Cultural District are centered on the Dongfeng Lane renovation project, which involves 29 buildings with a total floor area of around 17,500 square meters. So far, 17 buildings have been completed: 13 have been carefully restored to their original character; 2 relocated structures have been precisely repositioned to preserve the historical context; and 2 new buildings have been added, introducing a fresh, contemporary element to the district.
The Houzhang Xiwei Historical and Cultural District in Luoyuan County is renowned for its well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty architecture. The ancient Luoning official road runs through the district, which features 11 well-maintained ancient buildings, including the Zhang Family Compound and the Former Residence of Huang Quan, as well as two immovable cultural relic protection sites. In September 2024, the Fujian Provincial Experimental Min Opera Theatre presented Moonlight over Xiwei: Fortune Shines on Luoyuan, an immersive, large-scale production created especially for the Luoyuan community. Staged on Xiwei Street at the heart of this historical and cultural district, the performance injected new life into the ancient street. Today, the Houzhang Xiwei Historical and Cultural District has blossomed into a vibrant cultural and tourism hub, featuring monthly markets and weekly events.
