Shangxiahang Historical and Cultural District

The Shangxiahang Historical and Cultural District is situated along the central axis of Fuzhou. It is the birthplace of Fujian merchants and a key node on the Maritime Silk Road, often referred to as the “Traditional Commercial Museum of Fuzhou.” During the late Qing and early Republican eras, merchants flocked here in large numbers, creating a lively scene where goods arrived with the tide on boats, and countless wine shops hung their curtains, bustling with customers. The district is situated in Taijiang District, adjacent to the northern bank of the Minjiang River at Cangxia, covering 31.73 hectares. Its core protection zone covers 353 mu and encompasses 21 cultural heritage sites, 80 registered historical landmarks, and 311 traditional-style buildings. With a total planned investment of 3.025 billion yuan, the project builds on the existing street network and building foundations, using Longping Road as the main axis to connect Shanghang Street, Xiahang Street, Sanjie River, Zhongping Road, and Longlingding. It aims to develop four dynamic areas: Yeyue Entertainment Area, Industry Experience Area, Arts & Business Area, and International Fashion Area, creating a vibrant, interconnected ecosystem across the district. The project seeks to promote the preservation and restoration of the Shangxiahang Historical and Cultural District, turning it into a standout “golden landmark” for Fuzhou tourism that rivals the renowned Sanfang Qixiang.
